July 3, 2007 — IF everyone has a price, Fergie’s is $4 million.
The 32-year-old Black Eyed Peas singer is the first global star to consent to product placement in her songs - agreeing to include the provocative clothing line Candie’s in her lyrics.
While other artists routinely drop in name brands into their songs or even accept fees to show products in videos, the musician born Stacy Ann Ferguson, who once ripped it up as a child star on “Kids Incorporated,” is making history by blurring the lines between jingle and pop song.
Under the deal with Candie’s, a skimpy, teen-oriented clothing line, Fergie will be appearing in TV advertisements and also allowing Candie’s “style advisers” to dress up fans at her shows. On the Candie’s Web site (where the Fergie agenda is endorsed, noting “It’s all about the flossy, flossy”), a video of the Californian singer appears prominently on what they call “C-Tube.”

In the opening scenes of Miami Vice, one of the summer’s hottest movies, a twitchy informant arranges a hasty meeting with undercover cops Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. The informant arrives in a Bentley. The cops roll up in a Ferrari F430. At that point, just a few minutes into the film, you clearly know this is a movie that puts a premium on automotive style.
While style has been a part of Miami Vice since Don Johnson first donned a white linen jacket over a pink T-shirt, cars certainly haven’t taken a back seat. In the original pilot series, Johnson’s Sonny Crockett drove a black Ferrari Daytona, a car that looks as good today as it did in 1984. (That sense of timelessness is jarringly offset, though, by Crockett’s use of a portable phone the size of his forearm and by the fact that, on the way to the climactic meeting with a drug lord, he pulls his Ferrari up at a phone booth to call his ex-wife.)

When The Stylephile’s gorgeous Mom got divorced in 1990 and came home with a new pair of Candie’s, we knew she wouldn’t be single for long. (We also implored her to set them on fire, but you know how difficult divorcee Moms can be.) Now, we hear that the Black Eyed Pea known as Fergie–the current face of Candie’s–has accepted $4 million to somehow incorporate the iconic, your-condo-or-mine brand into her songs. You know our feelings on product placement and how we hate like Hell that so many super rich artists are willing to barter their integrity for a brand. We are so sickened by this transaction that we refuse to picture Fergie the pop star. Instead, we found this lovely image of Fergie the rat on worldofrats.com. This furry Fergie, by the way, refuses to endorse anything but a worldwide garbage strike.
