Cracked.com’s Jeff Steinbrunner took on the product placement industry with his story today on the top ten shameless product placements of all time. Continuing our take on the story, here’s the writer’s #7-5.
At #7, Transformers‘ filmmaker Michael Bay gets bashed for shilling GM vehicles. He singles out the Camaro specifically and how Bumblebee goes from a classic model to a newer and improved. There’s countless others referenced in the article as well as the movie itself, but the movie, for me anyway, was so much fun that I was more engrossed with the fun popcorn flavor of the movie, the placement didn’t get in the way for me. On the other hand, I could see how it could for other viewers.
At #6, is Minority Report for its futuristic ads for such products as Omega, Lexus, and Gap. That’s only the beginning of the placement complaints. Personally, the placements didn’t bother me. Most were seamless and enhanced the futuristic storytelling. They were done creatively and didn’t get in the way of this underrated movie.
At #5 , is You Got Mail, which one could obviously figured out what the beef is right off the bat. For starters, the movie is named after AOL’s key slogan. Toss in a bunch of Starbucks scenes and well, who wouldn’t take a pot shot at this film? It’s not all bad for sure, but honestly a lot of these placements beat us over the head.
