Cracked.com’s Jeff Steinbrunner took on the product placement industry with his story today on the top ten shameless product placements of all time. Continuing our take on the story, here’s #4-2.

At #4 is I, Robot, which has been blasted for its blatant brands it seems every since it came out. The film is singled out for its Audi placement which boasts - according to the story - over four minutes of screentime. Another talking point is Will Smith’s Converse All-Stars which are on full display. Nike takes the blame there in that it had just purchased Converse, so the writer points out that filmmakers with that company sold out. There’s very little I recall of the film, but I do remember the Converse scene which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What was your take on this movie?  #3 below the fold.#3 is Michael Bay’s The Island. Not a day goes by where some story doesn’t creep up about Bay’s two hour action packed commercial. The film has over 35 product placements according to the article. Calvin Klein ads are notably showcased in the article.  Bay often comes under criticism for his use of product placement - this film is no different. Personally, I had bigger problems with the script than the products.

#2 is The Wizard, a cheesy 1980s movie starring Fred Savage and essentially Nintendo. The movie is about a trip between siblings on their way to a huge video game tournie. It made news because it included all things Nintendo from Power magazine to the Power glove. It also debuted Super Mario 3 which was huge at the time.  The plot? None-existent. While the movie’s panned for its placement here, I think it’s just a victim of its era. Back than Nintendo was everywhere, Fred Savage was everywhere so it just seemed like a logical connection. I’ve seen worse product placement in movies. This movie is just one big mess.
