Not even last-minute concessions to limit the deal were able to save the Yahoo-Google search ad pact. The companies announced today that they would not go ahead with their agreement in the face of opposition by the Department of Justice. For all the deals that the feds have approved, it’s odd that this was the one that was scuttled. Search is just one portion of the online ad marketplace and, even if Google and Yahoo together make up around 80% of that market, the deal only called for Google to power a small portion of Yahoo’s search ads. In their most recent rumored concessions, they had agreed that Google ads would account for no more than 25% of Yahoo’s search revenue.

Search engine company Wink Technologies and Reunion, a social networking site, have merged to create a hybrid site and brand that will debut in early 2009, the companies said Monday.

In a move expected to spur broadband growth, the Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to allow the unlicensed use of the white space spectrum.
“Opening the white spaces will allow for the creation of a WiFi on steroids,” FCC chair Kevin Martin said in a statement issued Tuesday. “It has the potential to improve wireless broadband connectivity and inspire an ever-widening array of new Internet based products and services for consumers.”
