In this week’s wedding episode of Worst Week, guest star Fred Willard plays the Barney Miller theme on abss while Sam namedrops the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine. It’s not much, but two product placements for retro TV nonetheless. Also of note: during the episode a promo for the new Web show Novel Adventures was played. The show is sponsored by Saturn and the commercial let the world know that.
Despite fourth-quarter advertising cutbacks, online video ad prices in the slumping economy appear to be holding steady so far. Media agency executives expect this sector of the Internet advertising ecosystem to suffer price decreases early next year, as nearly all ad prices drop.
Worst Week has had very few and often subtle product placements in each episodes, but this past Monday had a nice (and blatant) verbal mention of TCBY in it. One of the characters refers to it by name. Nothing too crazy, but worth mentioning.
For the second time in a month, Starburst has underwritten a unique content distribution deal for the Next New Networks’ series Nite Fite, which resulted in an episode of that show receiving premium placement on YouTube via its top homepage ad placement.
Think of it as product placement for the same companies. It was revealed earlier this week that not only does Marvel’s Iron Man feature a cameo by a Captain America pop (a shield is visible in one sequence in Tony Stark’s office), but in a delted scene of the recently released on DVD Incredible Hulk, the Marvel character appears in a scene frozen in ice. Both scenes are obvious plugs for the future Marvel release, which is due in about two years. The role of Captain America hasn’t been cast yet but the film title is already set: Marvel Origins: Captain America.
